Whether it's caused by sitting at a desk all day or taking part in those ubiquitous office celebrations, a significant number of employees are gaining an alarming amount of weight, according to a recent survey from CareerBuilder. Even more foreboding: This trend continues even though nearly six out of 10 survey participants say they work out regularly. Fortunately, many organizations are taking notice and adopting preventative measures. "More and more companies are implementing healthy living initiatives in the workplace," says Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. "We've found that 28 percent of companies provide gym passes, workout facilities or wellness benefits for their employees. It's important to tap into those resources to stay healthy, energized and potentially more productive." CareerBuilder notes that you can incorporate healthy living into your day without hitting the gym by taking stairs instead of elevators; eating small, healthy snacks instead of large, fatty meals; and packing your own lunch to provide better portion control. More than 5,770 U.S. workers took part in the research.
